THE RUT AND MOON PHASE

Alsheimer, the most popular lunar theorist, claims that changes in moonlight affect melatonin levels, with ultimate effects on the timing of reproduction. He states that in the North (north of about the 35th latitude), when the second full moon after the Autumnal Equinox occurs between late October and Nov. 12, peak breeding will begin seven days after the full moon. When the second full moon after the Autumnal Equinox occurs Nov. 13 or later, peak breeding will begin on the full moon. You might have read our previous articles on the rut in Deer & Deer Hunting. In those, we explained how the annual breeding cycle of bucks and does is regulated by photoperiod, which is simply the relative amount of daylight and darkness throughout the year. The amount of daylight is unconsciously perceived by deer through the optic nerve, which ultimately signals the brain to release specialized hormones. Here’s an example of how powerfully photoperiod can influence deer, particularly bucks: When artificial light was used to manipulate the annual photoperiod cycle, captive bucks grew and shed four sets of antlers in a year. In other words, researchers condensed what would typically be a 12-month photoperiod cycle into three months, and the bucks responded accordingly.
